Quite a number of our cherished First World War Diggers survived Gallipoli, however they ended up having lives taken from them during an ill-conceived attack in their first action on the Western Front which took place on the 19th July 1916.

In this battle that took place on the Western Front, our Diggers were up against an entrenched German force which was to out number them two to one. This all took place near the small French village of Fromelles.

The result was to be the darkest night in the history of Australia. There were 5533 casualties and almost 2000 killed. There were twelve sets of brothers included in the dead and two of father and son. Against all odds, hundreds of the Australians men broke through the enemy lines, only they were never to return.  For close to a century now, their fate has not been known.  As far as their families knew or the entire world for that matter, it was as though they had simply disappeared into the mists of history. That is until now.

Fromelles is the most terrible military debacle in Australia however it is hardly mentioned in history books and it is not appear on any of Australia’s war memorials. Does this mean there was a cover-up? Where are the missing Diggers? How is it that it has taken so long for action?

Fromelles is the true story of one survivor who refers to the event as ‘the mystery battle of the AIF’. This book tells of a behind the scenes account of investigative work from a group of amateur historians – led by Lambis Englezos a Greek Melbourne art teacher, and Sydney solicitor Chris Bryett. This amazing book details their search to find the definitive resting place of the lost Diggers of Fromelles.

Fromelles introduces us to a number of our preeminent but unknown heroes and also crosses paths with a number of significant characters from World War I, such as the German defenders of Fromelles, Lance Corporal Adolf Hitler.

Fromelles is told with passion, it is an engrossing mixture of detective work and war history which takes the reader to the killing fields of France and then back to Australia to find the key to unlock the greatest mystery of WWI.
