Worst New Television Shows of 2009
Posted by Kristy in The Vampire Diaries on December 16, 2009
There is almost too much horrible reality show dreck to list here so I will try to keep my hatred of reality TV to a minimum but really, I cold just fill my list with stuff like Bromance or A Double Shot At Love, but I won’t Nonetheless, here is a list of the worst new television shows of 2009.
Knight Rider
I’m sure a reboot of the 1982 television series about a talking car might have seemed like a winning idea in these current nostalgic-happy times, but the royally dropped the ball with this series. The only thing they got right was bringing back Val Kilmer to do the voice of KITT, the artificially intelligent automobile, otherwise this show misses out on what was a great opportunity to add some life into this old series, instead they bring nothing new to the story and throw in some attractive lead characters to distract you from the inane plots.
Brothers
This urban comedy on Fox has an NFL player in the lead role—what else is there to say? Every sitcom cliché you can think of is packed into this half hour show. I can’t imagine anyone of any race enjoying this show and it’s not just because I am white that I don’t “get it.” When your show has stale, homophobic jokes about sleeping in twin bunk beds you know it’s time to give it a rest. It’s just bad, that’s all there is to it.
The Vampire Diaries
We get it, vampires are popular right now. Does that mean that every network on television has to have their own vampire themed show to try to compete with really, the only vampire show that should be on TV (“True Blood”)? Despite the star-making potential for former Degrassi: Next Generation cutie Nina Dobrev, The Vampire Diaries isn’t go to break any new ground or find any new fans other than Twilight fan-girls and Degrassi lovers. The vampire genre does not need any more teen drama vampire tales that dilute the darkness of the old tales.
Glee
It is one of the most critically acclaimed and popular new shows of the year but I just don’t get it. I get that it taps into our nation’s current obsession with singing and dancing and competition shows but does it have to be so…fey? I don’t know how a straight person can watch this show and not feel extremely uncomfortable. The one redeeming factor of Glee is star Jane Lynch finally getting her moment of fame after putting in her time doing stand-up and great improvisation comedy with Christopher Guest. I wish her and the young actors all the success and hopefully they can find projects that aren’t as one-note as this.
