If you have no respect for depth and emotion, then it will turn up to be a boring movie. However, if you can register all the feelings this movie has weaved into it, it’s not boring at all. Something about it that’s not really edgy at all keeps you on the edge

I read the book when I was a little, and snored on it. I went to see the movie in spite of how boring the book was for me, and fell in love. All throughout this movie, you have a sense that this fantasy world is more realistic than it looks. You feel almost uneasy throughout it, because you can just feel what could go wrong in every scene, and some parts even scared me. It’s a movie about a child, but it’s not a child’s movie. They won’t be able to really get that vibe the movie gives off.

I’m the only one out of my family that loved this movie. Karen O did and awesome job with the soundtrack.

You are such an idiot. No one wants you here. You obviously havent read the book and dont understand how extremely magic the whole movie is. I bet you like Dane Cook and hate to read.

If you didn’t notice, even though Max ran away he came back and realized his mistakes.
The movie has the meaning of responsibility.
I do agree that an 8 year old kid wouldn’t understand it, but it’s common enough that parents divorce and one of the parents gets a new partner and it adds conflict. So they just might understand it. I know the 8 and 9 year old I watched it with understood it all.
Even if they need to ask their parents about it, it’s still great for kids.

See, I still cant believe that this movie was based on a 15 page book. Plus the fact that its rated PG, it should be like PG-13 for fucking scary hairy monsters

amen Patty – couldn’t agree more!

Not all 8 year old kids are the same. The character, Max, for example is about 8 and in the film has certainly had to endure some serious issues in his young life. Many kids will be able to relate to Max’s situation and maybe this film will make them feel better. Any kid that watches this should watch it with their parents and the parents should have a discussion with their kids about it.This film, just like the book, is EXCELLENT at helping parents engage in healthy convos with their kids :)

I doubt a kid that is 8 years old will understand the meaning of it..I don’t think they’ve been through much situations to really relate to the metaphors..I think all it can do is, maybe inspire kids to run away from home to make things “better”.

The movie was so bad (imo) not even the soundtrack could save it

Early teen years are the best year for watching movies if you look at the balance between interest/comprehension/visual impression…

You are exactly right exposing children at younger ages

You all aren’t giving kids any credit. I have 3 kids and can tell you they are quite capable of taking the message from a film… they just do it in their own way… they do it in ways us grown ups can’t really comprehend anymore. Don’t think for a second a kid can’t ‘get’ the message of this film.

  24. #24 by 1263161 on December 19, 2009 - 5:31 am

this movie shows that since he is a “challenged” kid he is having a dream of these wild things and each one shows a different emotion in his head…

yeah, i suppose youre right. not to the extent adults will. that being said, i still dont think many kids will take away the message from this movie. others, maybe
